Reflection #8

This is the best reflection to write, the last blog post graded.  I have enjoyed just about everything from this class.  Some of the assignments were extremely challenging and I try to be a perfectionist, so using technology for the first time and not instantly being a pro is very stressful to me.  I don't necessarily qualify as a digital native because I did have 110 and 35 mm film for my camera as a child.  I grew up in a home that always had a computer, I cannot ever remember being without a computer.  I remember the tv commercials showing the business man ordering flowers for his wife on the "internet" and it seemed like it took many years for people to actually believe you can buy something on a computer.  I also remember setting up my very first email account, AOL, my sophomore year in high school ('97) and from 2000 on I have been submersed in digital everything.  Today, my own home has 4 computers, an Ipad, Ipod, Iphone, digital camera and so on.  All that to say, these items have really advanced the users.

I believe the favorite item for me has been the podcasts.  It took me while to figure it out, but when I did...I feel in love with that technology!  It is brilliant to share assignments, notes, step-by-step in structions without repeating yourself 100 times in a day.  I will definately continue to use podcasts as both educational tools for lectures and reinforcement and organizational tools for students.  I also like this blog and the kidblog for students.  I did also like the google sites and I plan on incorporating a class website to share with students and parents, however it will take additional navigation to master that.  The instructions are not user friendly and many items seem to have you working in circles.  I can see how wonderful this would be as a tool for communication though.  My biggeset change will be to continue to challenge myself to grow and learn new things in technology.

I do believe I will continue to use my blog.  I have had another personal blog for a while before the class blog and I enjoyed sharing information with my followers, however it was difficult to think of topics to write about.  I will keep it education centered and while I somewhat want to share my personal beliefs about teaching in Texas, I am not sure to what extent I will share my opinions.

I have very much enjoyed ETEC 524!

Reflection #7

Reflection #7 – igoogle – do you?

Book Report –
1)      Tradition 4 page report
2)      Watch teacher created podcasts
3)      Post to class blog with comments and/or posts
4)      Create a cinch podcast summarizing book report

I could have used blogger from google, however I set up a class blog on the kidblog.org site that we learned about last week.  I also utilized jing to create my podcasts and the students will use cinch to create their audio podcasts.
I believe that my teaching lesson touches several factors; however I will focus specifically on the Organization set from Bloom’s Taxonomy of the Affective Domain.  Since I am student teaching, I have to build most of lessons in addition to or from my mentor teachers lesson plans.  I was very motivated from our Week 6 technology project and began to put it to use instantly.  My mentor teacher gave me an outline for a book report project in our Business Law class and I took the idea of the kidblog and cinch podcast in addition to ideas of my own to build the lesson and activities around the book report.  Along with the traditional requirements, read a book, write a paper; I have incorporated podcasts to help students work through a lesson (I don’t have to repeat myself to each student), required and graded blog comments and posts, required and graded cinch podcasts for book report summary.  Here is the link to the class blog I have created.  http://kidblog.org/MrsHulseys-BookReportSummary/
The Business Law class is part of the Career and Technology Education Department, including technology is required in most lessons and many businesses today utilize blogs to share information and create a personable relationship with customers and clients.  The first part of the lesson required each student to sign on to the class blog and read my first blog about the book report.   Here is the link to my first blog post.  http://kidblog.org/MrsHulseys-BookReportSummary/TiffCh324/business-law-second-semester-project/  Next, they had to select a book from an approved list and create their first comment on my initial blog post stating their name and the book chosen for their book report.  The selection was first come first serve and if their comments were approved they would know if their selection was approved.  We then had class time to visit the library to check out their chosen books or have the librarian order their book from the public library for the project.  We have just started this project and it will be ongoing amongst other assignments for the next eight weeks.  My class will have 1class day each week to blog notes about what they have read so far in their book.  This is designed to help them with reading time and remember important events and characters in their book for their final summary and 4 page report.  I will also be communicating to my students through the blog after each assignment, particularly by leaving comments to their weekly posts.  One of the final parts of the project will be to create a cinch podcast summarizing their 4 page book report.  I will play each of the students podcasts in class and have the students take notes of each of their classmates summary and the final part of the project will be to post a comment to each students cinch podcast from the notes they took while listening to the cinch podcasts in class.
Upon completion of the Book Report Project , the learner will be able to recognize the need for balance between freedom and responsible behavior and to prioritize time effectively to meet the needs of the organization, family, and self at a beginner level.  While the students are not dependent of the other students for part of their individual grade, they are required to make a contribution to other students to receive full credit for certain grades throughout the project.

Video comments –
I think the future of education needs to focus on creating a better balanced lesson organization between traditional forms and technology forms.  So many teachers are afraid of technology and school districts are doing their students an injustice by not requiring those teachers to be educated on technology and actually being required and monitored for the use of that technology in the classroom.

Igoogle –
I have set my homepage to igoogle.  I had never heard of this tool before this week and I am excited about the convenience it offers.  I love that you can access all of your important information from one screen!  igoogle eliminates the need for several windows and I imagine will help to speed up your computer while you are working on certain things.  In combination of igoogle and delicious, my computer navigation is quick and easy.

Reflection #6

Can you hear me now?
This lesson was a great teaching tool and really challenged me.  I found that coming up with the topic for the podcast was possibly one of the toughest decisions to make.   I realized that it is important to focus on the information you want to make clear or make sure your listener is getting that out of the podcast.  I did my podcast about using credit card calculators online to determine the length of time to pay off a credit card paying the minimum payment and paying off a credit card with a set time frame.  I just recently taught this lesson in my Principles of Business class and if I knew how to make a podcast last week, I could have shared this with them to reference to on their assignment, instead of repeating myself 25 times.
I can personally see how the podcast makes the online course discussion more personal.  I have taken several online courses throughout several years and the last few years they have really become much more involved including more exciting communication.  It is no longer just a computer screen and reading assignments, you can now interact.
I am very excited about the possibilities that podcasts create.  I intend to use in my classroom as much as possible and also as a realtor.  I can create podcasts to help my students with an assignment or to help clients search for a home!
I used jing and screenshot to create my final podcast.  I also downloaded cinch on my computer and my iphone and I am really enjoying learning about that tool.  I loved the teacher’s idea about having students read their book reports into a cinch podcast and posting to a class website.  I am currently thinking of a way to incorporate that into my current book report project I have my class doing.
Podcasts were very difficult for me because I had no experience with them and it took watching the videos and searching for additional information before I began to understand it.   I finally had that “ah ha” moment and it just made sense.  That is when I got excited about it and began to see all the many possibilities that I can use podcasts for in the future.

Reflection #5 - Information Literacy & Social Bookmarking

Information Literacy

When it comes to searching for information on the interest, I knew that the information you could find was virtually limitless, that some information was reliable while others were not, that anyone can post anything online, and for research purposes you should be careful what information you chose. After taking the information literacy quiz on novemberlearning.com, I was shocked by just how information illiterate I was. I knew a number of search engines, but I had no idea what a directory was. I also had no idea why you would use quotes to search for something, but now I know it is to make sure your keywords actually show up in your search results. I found this quiz to be very beneficial and educational. When it comes to searching for information on a website, I will search for the links from Google; it appears to be a useful tool for quick searches.
I am relatively confident that my research information coming off the internet in the last 2 years was reliable information. I am not confident of research in earlier years because I used sites such as Wikipedia and Google search information that is not necessarily research quality. I believe that the information I have taken from online sources for teaching are reliable. I stick to government sites and research online material myself for accuracy before using in the classroom or suggesting students to search a particular website. I choose the website California’s Velcro Crop Shortage for this activity and laughed throughout the reading! My grandfather owned a cotton gin so my prior knowledge immediately made the information funny. At points it was very convincing, especially to someone who had no prior knowledge on the subject or experience with Velcro. After all, look at all the uses we have and things we can make with cotton. I could see where someone might find this information believable and unfortunately use it as a resource for research. This activity made me aware of even more tools (other search engines & directories) I can incorporate in classroom research and project based assignments that I got so excited I also started working on a web search lesson for my classes! As teachers, we should explain and allow students to explore information on the website and help them realize that not everything out there is reliable or accurate. There are those people that believe everything they hear and read and we do not want our students to be those people. We want our students to be able to think for themselves and question the information they have been given, be able to verify something. For example, some of our students are already voting age or will be soon and if they believed everything they heard and read about the presidential candidates they would have mixed messages and are even more confused about who to vote for. By teaching them this information they will be able to discern if the information is reliable, be able to research accurate information on each presidential candidate and make an educated vote they are confident with.

Delicious – Social Bookmarking

I love the ease of bookmarking! I am one of those people that have a thousand favorites; so many that I don’t even use the tool. Seriously, I saved the websites I used the most for convenience and it was no longer convenient. I am excited that with the fact that the delicious account is web based, enabling you to access your “favorite” websites from any computer! After adding my initial link and initial stack, it was very easy! The ability to share information and have access to others tools is a great idea for teaching. We are challenged everyday to bring technology into the classroom and having access to view what other people have linked is terrific, you can use their ideas or build upon their ideas. I am also a real estate agent and there is multiple website I use to research information on homes. I had those websites saved in my favorites, however if I was working on a office computer or any other computer besides mine I did not have access to the least used sites I did not remember. With delicious I have created a stack with all the websites I use and I actually find it freeing and relaxing. If my laptop battery dies and I forgot my power cord at home, I can still utilize all the websites I need from delicious. When looking through the other websites I liked the Diigo website, it was easy to read, seemed user friendly, was ipad/iphone compatible, and you can save other media with your bookmarks such as PDF files and photos. I did find where you can add delicious to your ipad and iphone, so I will be utilizing that feature as well.

Reflection #4 - Eportfolios

Learning is a continuous process and I have always been told if I am breathing, I should be learning something new every day. I enjoy learning and believe that eportfolios are a great way tool for assessment on learning. The first time I used a portfolio was in 6th grade art class, we kept every piece we created in class throughout the year and stored them in a portfolio that was also a piece of art. I remember showing that portfolio to my parents, grandparents, and anyone else that would pay attention. I also remembered the pride I had in my art work and how the anticipation grew as the pieces in my portfolio got better as my skill and understanding grew throughout the year. Today’s eportfolio is no different to me. I still want to show my parents, grandparents, potential future employers, and anyone else that will look at my work. Even as an adult I am proud of what I have learned and I believe it shows in the work I produce. I think that the eportfolio is a great tool because it allows you to store information from many sources and you can see the growth of a person on many different subjects. Also, it gives you the ability to use your past work as a source or reference to build upon and continue learning. You have the ability to conveniently revisit that lesson, which eliminates or lessons the chance of you forgetting something you have already learned.

The article, Electronic Portfolios as Digital Stories of Deep learning, discussed two assessments; assessment for learning and assessment of learning. A few comparisons between the two assessments are: Assessment of learning checks what has been learning to date, usually compares the students’ learning with either other students or the ‘standard’ for a grade level, and does not need to involve the student; Assessment for learning checks learning to decide what to do next, usually focuses on improvement, compared with the student’s ‘previous best’ and progress toward a standard, and needs to involve the student – the person most able to improve learning. These are the main reasons I have to say I most relate to the use of eportfolios as assessments for learning. I believe that learning is individualized; you decide what is important to you and study those things to learn them. In other words the ability compare your current work to your previous work is a bigger motivator for improvement and growth than comparing your work to your peers. I believe the potential for portfolio assessment is great and a terrific way for assessing a student’s knowledge of that subject before moving forward. As stated before, I also see it is a personal motivator and as a tool to recall prior learning and build upon instead of forgetting. I believe that the creation of my class eportfolio will assist me in the future because I am already thinking of the many things I can utilize this for in my classroom. I love the idea of having a site that I can share with my students and their parents as a tool for communication, I can create a contact form where students and parents can email directly from that with any questions or concern they might have. I can share homework assignments and instructions; this would be a great tool for students who were working on projects over the weekend or anytime outside of school. I can share class and school information conveniently, such as field trips and holidays. I can brag on students and good work examples, such as student of the week/month in my classes, pictures or videos of projects being worked on in class.

Reflection #3 - Wikis

Reflection blog #3 - Wiki Week!

I created a wiki for teachers to share technology ideas and create a community to help each other enhance lesson engagement with today's digital native students. Teachers have a 30 minutes lunch window, conference time, and staff development days together, which is rarely enough time to discuss ideas. This wiki will allow teachers to share ideas and success stories at their convenience and others to read at a time that is comvenient to them.

Wikis are a great way for a group to communicate and build upon each others ideas. If something worked for one person and did not for another, they can share those stories. Not only technology, but they can share strategies or any other tool that came accross as exciting to their students.

Since I am student teaching, I have shared my wiki with my mentor teacher. I will ask him to share with the other teachers in the CTE dept. I am excited to see what kind of reaction the other teachers have to the wiki and this type of communcation. I hope they see how this can enhance their own classroom and share ideas.

The advantage of wikis is simply the ease of communication and ability to share information quickly and at your convenience. The disadvantage is simply not using the wiki and for some the new technology may be overwheming. I remember the first time I signed on to facebook and I thought it was a different language compared to the ease of myspace. Until you have actually used a tool several times, it can be scary and not seem to be worth your while since you do not understand how to navigate the system yet. However, just as I learned to use facebook, we can all learn to use new tools and as teachers we should always continue to learn, especially new technology!

I am looking forward to the day that I can set up a wiki for my own classroom! I believe that a wiki would be a great way to communicate between the teacher and student. I would be able to post lesson information and share different tools and references for the students to utilize both in the classroom and from home. Everything on the wiki is public, and that would be great to share with parents as well. Parents would be able to see lesson directions from home and help their child or post a comment or quesitons that I could reply to online. I think that the open communication is an obvious advantage.

Reflective Blog post #2

International society for Technology in Education
ISTE is a premier membership association for educators engaged in improving learning and teaching by advancing the effective use of technology in PK-12 and teacher education. I chose this site because it is user friendly, was appealing to look at, and windows and drops information was easily accessible. It caught my attention and I like the use of videos on their website. It is a great way to engage someone looking into technology association membership. They offer many professional development opportunities and told for teaching in the digital age. After watching the video for their summer conference, I want to attend!

Reflection 1

Having your teaching philosophy written is important becuase as we continue to evolve as teachers, we can see where we started and build upon that.  Having it in writing will serve as a reminder and help us to refocus if we ever lose sight of our goals.

I see blogging as a wonderful tool that could enable our students to write freely about topics.  I do not believe we have met the potential that Stephen Downes discusses in his article.  We still have so many people afraid of what blogging could produce.  He talks about bosses being afraid or not allowing employees to blog about work experiences.  I feel that school districts may be scared for similar reason to allow students to have such freedom in writing.  Blogging would take off any masks the schools and teachers try to create concerning students and eliminate several excuses.  I personally think it would be great and we could see a rise in education quality from this freedom in writing.  I question the number of people truly willing to accept and adopt blogging as common place in schools.

I am excited and intigued by this class.  I have no idea what to expect, but after this first class I see that it is going to be a challenging and rewarding experience.  I hope to be efficient at blogging and have a better understanding of how we can use this in education.

ETEC Technology Teaching Philosophy

When I first thought about becoming a teacher, I initially wondered what I might teach.  I love history and I understand, and as an adult I now appreciate, the importance that history plays in shaping the future.  I also thought about math since I actually enjoyed it and it is currently in demand.  Finally, I thought about business education.  I feel that my 10 years experience in the banking industry combined with the last 5 years in management better suited me to teach Business Education.   As a teacher I want to teach the students about business and prepare them to enter the work force after high school if college is not their next step.  There are so many life lessons taught in the business education classes that prepare the students how to be successful and prepared citizens in the world after high school.  I want my students to be equipped with the knowledge and be able to apply for jobs and career opportunities in the business world, to be able to create a resume, submit an application, dress for success, have a successful interview, know the proper follow up.  I also want them to know how to do their assigned tasks and jobs using today’s technology such as Microsoft office software.  One thing I feel passionate about is making sure they know how to open a checking and savings account, how they each work, and prepare my students how to handle money.  I want them to know how to make money and what to do with the money they made.
I plan to use a variety of teaching strategies and methods to keep my students from becoming bored and to keep the information the focal point of the lesson.  I enjoyed the jig saw strategy and I know that will be a great way to explore a lot of information in business.  There is often a lot of material to cover and what I like most about the jig saw is that it allows peers to teach peers and everyone is included, no matter the learning situation.  Another strategy I really liked and plan to use is the student created electronic picture book and the student authored electronic book.  After going over class materials the students then create a Power point slideshow including pictures and information about their lessons materials and share with their peers.  This strategy can be used for any content area on any lesson.  I enjoy the hands on activities and this will be perfect to prepare students how to use the software in the business setting as well.
I will also use a variety of technology in my classroom.  Technology is not simply a part of our lives, it is essential to our lives.  We plan, communicate, socialize, learn, and teach with technology.  You cannot sufficiently teach anything without the use of technology to today’s students.  They are the tech generation and have grown up with this.  I will incorporate several forms of technology into my classroom through use of ipad apps, you tube videos, elmo, smart board to name a few.  I am an informator through the use of these items and will strive to continue to be on the cutting edge of new technology.
My grading will be based upon criterion.   Many examples are correct, not just one or a select few to base everyone else too.  One example I would use in my grading would be assignments based on templates.  Another important tool in grading will be the use of rubrics for different assignments.  I will provide my students with clear expectations, instructions, and grading requirements for each assignment so that they can follow when creating those assignments.   I will incorporate many projects and different activities that allow the students to demonstrate their understanding of the material.  I will utilize written tests, but I feel a majority of my assessments will be in project or peer presentation format.
Improvement on my teaching style will be constant; I believe we learn new things every day.  As I learn more about my students personally, as I learn how to better communicate with that age group, as I learn better about my teaching styles I will be ever evolving into a better teacher.  I realize that I have focused on myself and what I will learn and I think that is the key to improving as a teacher.  I can only improve after looking at my faults and short comings.  I hope that my students will care enough to share thoughts or ideas about how they feel I am communicating and teaching them and what I could do to improve or increase the effectiveness I have on them.  I believe skills can be improved upon daily and certainly through useful teacher workshops and events.  However, I think that communication between me and my students will be the most effective tool to directly help me improve as a teacher.  I am not sure if we will know immediately if our teaching is truly effective or not.  That may be something not known ever or until much later when a student takes the time to share the impact and importance we may have made at a certain point in time.
My teaching philosophy is that of Idealism and Recontructivism.  My goal is for each student to be able to clearly identify their goals & priorities and I believe that it is going to take some changes to make that a reality.  Teaching is important to me and exciting because hopefully I will have an impact and possibly improve the future of the next generation.  My own children are starting school and I am more excited and determined to make a difference because of my own children and the impact they have made on my life.  My Christian beliefs will enable me to maintain positive relationships with students and colleagues.  I believe in the “golden rule” and will treat everyone fair and equal with respect and certainly as I want to be treated.  I’m not saying I will teach the students my beliefs, but my beliefs will shape my actions.  They will be able to know who I am by what I do.
